Taking a cruise on the high seas is a wonderful vacation but you still need to take precautions. The FBI reports that approximately 10 million Americans are expected to travel abroad this year on vessels that navigate international waters. As a matter of course, some of them will become victims of a crime. Sexual and physical assaults on cruise ships were the leading crimes reported to and investigated by the FBI on the high seas over the last five years, at 45 percent and 22 percent respectively.
Missing persons cases comprised 10 percent of cases opened and death investigations comprised 8 percent. Recently, incidents of piracy have been increasingly common in some parts of the world.Sexual assaults are the dominant threat to women and minors on the high seas. The vast majority of these incidents occur on cruise ships. Physical assaults are the second most frequent crime, and again, the majority of these assaults take place on cruise ships. "If you are going to go on a cruise, you want to treat it like you are going to a small city," says David Hearn, a supervisory special agent in the FBI's Indian Country/Special Jurisdiction Unit, which coordinates with field offices and the FBI's legal attachés overseas to investigate crimes on the high seas. "You don't know the people on a cruise ship. You don't know who's in the cabin next to you. Crime doesn't stop just because you are on a boat." What you can do! Do research on the ports you will be visiting. Learn about what to do if you are the victim of a crime. Find out where the US Embassy is located. Do research on the local hospitals and find out if they honor your insurance should you be injured. Having a plan of action and doing some research can reduce your odds of becoming a statistic. |
