Defend University of New York Self-Defense Classes

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Combat Submission Wrestling

Defend University features regular classes that combine the effective techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Combat Submission Wrestling. Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program dates back to 1994, when the first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy under Royce and Rorion Gracie was established by Steve Kardian, Jon Burke and Tony Gioffre. In 2001, we added Combat Submission Wrestling to the program. Developed by Erik Paulson, CSW provides innovative techniques that compliment Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu well. These two martial arts, taught together as part of one curriculum, provide a well-balanced close quarters and ground fighting self-defense system.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu may be the most effective fighting style ever developed. Also known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, this exciting martial art rose to prominence during the mid 1990s, when Royce Gracie used it in the Ultimate Fighting Championship events to defeat a number of experienced martial artists schooled in traditional fighting styles like karate, Tae Kwon Do, boxing and wrestling.

BJJ is primarily a ground fighting style that places an emphasis on takedowns, throws, joint locks and chokes. There are no flashy-but-ineffective techniques like flying kicks or spinning backfists. In BJJ class, you will not learn parlor tricks like how to break boards or shatter blocks of ice. Instead, the art centers around simple, easy to learn techniques that will allow you to defeat larger opponents in real world fighting situations.

The proven effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu makes it the idea martial art for self defense. Additionally, the grueling cardiovascular workout provided by intense sparring sessions makes BJJ ideal for those looking to lose weight and/or improve fitness. Lastly, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu provides the foundation for a number of specialty programs including Rape Escape and LTL (Less than Lethal) Defensive Tactics for Law Enforcement.

We are affiliated with Relson Gracie black belt Phil Migliarese's Team Balance of Philadelphia, PA. One of the most talented of all American black belts, Phil visits our New York location on a regular basis.

Combat Submission Wrestling

Created by expert freestyle grappler Erick Paulson, blends Judo, Freestyle Wrestling and Greco-Roman Wrestling with techniques and submissions from Shootwrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo and Catchascatchcan. It is laden with painful submission holds and a plethora of devastating leg locks. This highly evolved style provides the perfect compliment to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

At Defend University, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Combat Submission Wrestling are taught as one program. The arts are very similar and borrow a lot from each other. We encourage you to stop in any time a beginner class is being held for a free introductory session. No appointment is necessary. Please see our course schedule for current dates and class times. We suggest wearing comfortable, loose fitting clothes (shorts or sweats and a t-shirt are idea). Both men and women are welcome. Participants must be sixteen (16) years old.

In addition to our regular course schedule, we host world-renowned guest instructors on a bi-monthly basis. Frequent visitors include Relson Gracie black belt Phil Migliarese and freestyle submission hold expert Erik Paulson.
